#sapsFS Today, in Bohlokong, Free State, Constable Macdonald Motete of the #SAPS was honoured with a fully furnished new home in recognition of his heroic actions during a devastating fire that destroyed his family’s house in August 2024. Despite the bitter winter weather, a high-profile delegation gathered to celebrate Motete’s bravery and support his family’s new beginning.
The fire broke out on the night of Sunday, 11 August 2024, at Motete’s home in Bethlehem. As flames consumed the building, Motete risked his life to rescue his wife and four young children, successfully leading each of them to safety. While his actions saved his family, the fire left them without shelter or possessions. Remarkably, Motete returned to duty the very next day, reflecting his deep commitment to service.
His courage captured national attention, prompting a collective effort to support his recovery. The initiative, led by the #WomensNetwork and #Men4Change with the backing of SAPS leadership, local stakeholders, and the provincial government, aimed to rebuild what was lost and restore the family’s stability.
The handover ceremony of the new home symbolised more than just physical rebuilding. Attended by dignitaries including Free State Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae,MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport Jabu Mbalula and the Provincial Commissioner of the Police, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, the event honoured Motete’s bravery and celebrated the values of community and solidarity.
Premier Letsoha-Mathae praised Constable Motete’s selfless actions, describing him as a “courageous public servant” and a symbol of the everyday heroism displayed by officers who protect their communities—even when danger strikes their own homes.
Emotionally moved, Constable Motete expressed gratitude for the support his family received, saying the new home gave them a fresh start. As his children played outside and his wife expressed heartfelt thanks, the community witnessed a moment of healing and resilience.
