A murder and extortion suspect was killed in a shootout with police in Mariannhill last night.

His accomplice – who was seriously wounded – was arrested.

Police had received intelligence about four armed suspects who were travelling in a Toyota Etios in the area.

They were wanted for murder, extortion, hijacking and armed robbery cases in Chatsworth and Mariannhill.

The suspects’ vehicle was intercepted on Mpanza Road in Savannah Park.

When they were instructed to stop, using lights and sirens, the suspects got off the vehicle and allegedly opened fire in the officers’ direction.

The first suspect died at the scene during the shootout, while the second was found nearby with gunshot wounds.

Two others, who were picked up by another car, are being sought.
